Tortuous travel lay ahead for these dreamers with promises of a better life at the end of their journey. Women who crisscrossed the unforgiving lands with their families did so with a heightened sense of survival, sheer grit, and tenacity.
Having a “doctor” [of sorts] accompany the travelers was extremely rare. And when they did, those proposing to be doctors might have had little to no real medical training that was available at the time. Rightfully so, travelers were weary of seeking “medical” advice and relied on their familiar and traditional methods of treatments.
Without a full understanding of human anatomy and how the body functioned, women on the frontier used natural remedies and crude techniques that were passed down through generations. Be it poultices, herbs, tinctures, and rough surgical procedures, this knowledge was critical for keeping their family and fellow travelers alive during the Westward migration.
